Blockstream said on Oct. 13, 2026 that multisig accounts are back in its Blockstream app, with two-key and two-of-three options for Bitcoin. NFA.

Account Choices

Users can create a two-key 2FA Protected account, or a two-of-three account for Bitcoin that adds a backup key only the user holds. Both account types work on Bitcoin while the two-of-three option is not yet on Liquid. Holders of legacy multisig accounts see no change and face no migration.

How the Keys Work

A 2FA Protected account pairs a device key secured by PIN with a key on Blockstream's servers secured by two-factor authentication. Users sign off on sends with an authenticator app, email, SMS or a phone call. Each deposit starts a timelock, after which the device key alone can spend it. An open-source tool aids recovery.

The two-of-three account's 2FA never expires, and the backup phrase plus device key can recover funds at once. Users can keep their own key on a Blockstream Jade, which pairs with the app.

Recovery and Next Steps

Blockstream plans to build recovery-tool features directly into the app. The company states that Blockstream cannot move funds alone under the multisig setup.

The update keeps the focus on user control. Legacy users continue without any required changes. Both account types stay limited to Bitcoin for now, with Liquid support for the two-of-three option listed as a future item.

Blockstream posted the details on its blog on Oct. 13, 2026. The changes went live the same day. Existing setups remain untouched, so no forced moves affect current holders.

The 2FA Protected account uses a device key and a server key. The device side stays with the user under PIN protection. The server side requires the second factor chosen by the user. This split keeps spending under user approval at each step.

The two-of-three account adds a user-held backup key. That key stays with the owner and does not rely on Blockstream servers. The 2FA layer stays active without expiration. Recovery stays possible through the backup phrase and device key together.

Jade hardware support lets users store the device key offline. The app connects to the device for signing. This option applies to both account types on Bitcoin.

Blockstream notes the open-source recovery tool helps users handle the timelock period. Plans call for moving those same recovery features inside the app later. No timeline was given for the Liquid side of the two-of-three account.

The blog post and the multisig page list these options in full. The Jade account on X confirmed the app update the next day. All details stay consistent across the sources.

Users who held multisig accounts before the change keep the same setup. No migration steps apply. New accounts follow the two described paths only.
